Ability Fest 2008

The Festival of Opportunities for Disabled People

Established in 1999, Ability Fest has become the No.1 annual event which offers unique benefits to the disabled community, employers and support organisations in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

The event's aims are:

  • To promote Equality Opportunities and Inclusion by raising awareness about disability issues within training, employment, education and life long learning;
  • To provide a networking opportunity for agencies and organisations that offer support to disabled people;
  • To connect disabled people with a wide range of support organisations and employers;
  • To introduce volunteering and leisure activities.

Ability Fest '08 took place on Friday 16 May in the Radisson-SAS Hotel, Argyle Street, Glasgow from 10am until 4pm. The Ability Fest Committee was delighted with success of this event which was co-ordinated for the first time by Heather O'Brien of the Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living. This followed a successful bid from GCIL to take on coordination of the event. The Committe would like to thank Heather for her enthusiasm and commitment to organising the event. Her attention to detail made sure that all aspects of the day ran smoothly - and were fun too! Negotiations are currently underway for GCIL to co-ordinate the next event in October 2009.

The Ability Fest Committee would like to thank the many organsitions who donated funds and in-kind support to allow the event to run. The Committe is particularly grateful to Councillor Irfan Rabbani Glasgow City Council, Executive Member for Equalities who worked tirelessly to help raise sufficient funds to go ahead this year.

"I am pleased to have had the opportunity to be involved and assist the tremendous efforts of the Committee. Ability Fest is, and should remain, an integral fixture in Glasgow´s "inclusive events" calendar. It is a unique facilitator, providing disabled people with access to information and services and allows services to engage and learn from their client group". (Councillor Irfan Rabbani, Glasgow City Council, Executive Member for Equalities)
