Learning is a priority for Glasgow Disability Alliance (GDA): learning for fun, learning for life, learning new skills and learning as a path to other opportunities and even employment if this is what the learner wants!

Whatever people´s learning needs and aspirations, GDA seek to provide or direct people to the right learning provider. The unique thing about our learning is that we provide additional support so that people can get the most from the learning e.g. transport, accessible building to learn in, personal assistants to help at the course, accessible information, and always, a welcoming and supportive attitude. We also encourage other learning providers to do the same.

By GDA keeping promises and working together with colleges, community projects, other agencies and disabled people themselves, learning can be fun and a gateway to lots of positive experiences!

GDA is a membership-led organisation of disabled people and groups in Glasgow. Established in 2001, its mission is to act as the collective, representative voice of disabled people, promoting equality, rights and social justice. GDA fills a gap in service provision as:

  • We support disabled people who want to get into learning by providing taster courses which are accessible and free.
  • We help disabled people to move onto other learning at community project courses, colleges, universities, in libraries or anywhere else.
  • We provide information to disabled people, their groups and those who work with them.
  • We work with organisations that provide learning and other services to disabled people, giving them information, advising them and training them to understand and better meet the needs of disabled people.
  • We build our membership to give us a stronger voice including other groups who are also treated unfairly.
  • We represent and advocate for our members by giving their views to agencies that serve disabled people including learning providers.
  • We encourage disabled people and their organisations to get together with policy and decision makers.
